Patty Dunnavant uses technology to make learning science more real for students.
CANTON - Patty Dunnavant has "liberated her student from workbooks, textbooks, pencils and paper," said Karen
Hawley, Principal of Freedom Middle School in Cherokee County.
As a biology teacher, Dunnvant believes in making science real for her students.
"I try everyday to apply it to something in the world today," said Dunnavant, an 11Alive Class Act Teacher.
On this day, the topic is genetics and Dunnavant gives each student some thing special.
"Each of you is going to be a separate disease," she said.
"I have Bloom's Syndrome," said one student.
"I got the disease Fragile X," said another.
For a third student, the disease is, "The cleft lip and cleft pallet disease".
"You're going to do more research into the disease that you have," said Dunnavant.
The students immerse themselves into the topic on their laptops.
"She teaches it (science) awesome," said Peter Gudbrandsen about Dunnavant.
Maybe someone in your family has it and you can find out more about it
Dunnavant also embraces new teaching methods.
"She is using technology with her kids in is very positive ways," said Hawley. "She has pictures, she has blogs, she has wikis."
On her blog, students post their thoughts on various projects.
"It's like a way to express ourselves," said Jace of the blog.
Dunnavant said, working with the students, "Keeps me young and it keeps my mind stimulated. I love being around the kids. The kids keep me on my toes all the time".
