ATHENS, Ga. -- With one of their own in the hospital and another being laid to rest this weekend, it's been a whirlwind week for Athens-Clarke County police officers who are still searching for the accused gunman, 33-year-old Jamie Hood.

"They're dealing with a lot of emotions right now,"  said Sgt. George Mestre with the Fraternal Order of Police.

Christian was the second Metro Atlanta officer killed in the line of duty this year.

"We are seeing an increase in officers deaths - not only officer deaths, but officers killed violently in the line of duty," Mestre said. "From 2009 to 2010, there was a 39 percent increase in officers killed in the line of duty."

The Fraternal Order is urging anyone who has seen Hood to come forward and call 911. They've chipped in $5,000 of the $50,000 reward being offered for information Hood's arrest.

"These officers are out there not only trying to capture someone who's killed their brother, but trying to catch somebody so they don't kill anybody else," Mestre said.
