ATHENS, Ga. -- Going out is getting a tad bit more personal with the launch of the new SceneTap application in Athens.

Before many people go out, they want to know the basics:  How crowded is it?  Are there any specials?  How far away is it?

With the SceneTap app for iPhone, iPad, and Android- users can get real-time information using facial detection technology.

As customers enter a venue, their photo is anonymously taken and compared with 20-million other faces in a database.  The database then uses an algorithim to determine their top 40 matches.  Those matches are used to determine the rough age and sex of customers at the location.

SceneTap then uses this information to provide users with several features:

-Real-time information on crowd size, gender, and age breakdown

-Daily specials and happy hour discounts

-Real-time deals and weekly coupons

-Social commentary and integration with Facebook, Twitter, and Foursquare

-Ratings, reviews and geo-location functions such as maps and directions

SceneTap says the photos are used only to determine the age and sex or customers, not to identify customers individually.  Business owners can then access demographic data from the app to assist with promoting their business.

The app is in a handful of cities across the US, including Athens.  They plan to launch in Atlanta in June.
